Why drive choice is device-specific

Every NAS appliance imposes its own limits, so the best drive is the one that fits the box as much as the one with the best price. The four constraints that matter are the bay count, the per-bay maximum capacity the model officially accepts, the RAID levels it offers, and, on newer Synology models, the validated-drive list that the operating system checks against.

Bay count and per-bay maximum together set your capacity ceiling. A 4-bay that accepts 24TB per bay can hold far more than a 2-bay capped at 18TB, and that ceiling decides whether you buy mid-tier drives now and grow, or pay the density premium up front. RAID options decide how much of that raw capacity becomes usable and how many failures you survive, which feeds back into how many drives you should buy.
