Build a Plex Server That Matches Your Library
From N100 direct play to 4K remux at scale, each with a full parts list and live cost

There are four Plex server builds here, and the right one is chosen by capability, not price. Pick the Budget N100 for direct play and a couple of 1080p transcodes; the Family N305 for three to five simultaneous 1080p streams across a household; the 4K Core i5 for two to three concurrent 4K HDR transcodes; and the High-End tower for 4K remux at scale with ECC, 10GbE and six-to-eight bays. The two middle tiers are the ones people confuse, so decide by the kind of transcoding you do: many 1080p streams point to Family, real 4K HDR transcoding points to 4K. How to choose your tier
On Plex, the one part that decides everything is the transcoding engine, and on these Intel builds that is Intel Quick Sync inside the integrated GPU. So the question is not how much to spend, it is what transcoding you actually ask the server to do. Direct play, where the client plays the file untouched, needs almost nothing; transcoding, where the server rebuilds the stream in real time, is the whole workload, and 4K HDR transcoding is far harder than 1080p.
Work out your case honestly. Count how many people stream at once, whether their devices force a transcode, and whether any of that content is 4K HDR that needs tone-mapping. Those three answers place you on one of the four tiers below more reliably than any budget will.

Which mid tier am I: Family or 4K?
This is the decision most people get wrong, because the Family and 4K builds cost similar amounts but do different jobs. They are split by capability, not budget. The Family N305 is optimised for many concurrent 1080p transcodes, so it suits a busy household where several 1080p streams run at once. The 4K Core i5 is optimised for 4K HDR tone-mapping and 4K-to-1080p transcoding, which is a genuinely harder task that needs the newer UHD 730/770 iGPU.
So ask one question: do you need to transcode 4K HDR content, or do you just need lots of 1080p streams? If it is many 1080p streams, buy Family and save the power and heat. If it is real 4K transcoding, buy 4K and do not compromise on the CPU generation, because an older iGPU cannot tone-map HDR cleanly. If you need both at scale, with a large protected library, that is the high-end tier.
Drives are separate: size them with the calculators
Each build's total covers the components, and drives are quoted separately as a plus, because the right array depends on your library size, not your CPU tier. Do any of these Plex builds need a graphics card?
No. All four rely on Intel Quick Sync in the integrated GPU for hardware transcoding, which is cheaper, cooler and lower-power than a discrete card for home use. A dedicated transcode GPU is only worth it for unusually high concurrent 4K stream counts beyond even the high-end tier's needs.
