Gaming SSD Guide: Find the Right NVMe SSD by Price, Capacity and Performance

Choose the right capacity and performance tier using current price and price per terabyte

Quick answer

For most gaming PCs, a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is the practical sweet spot: enough room for a useful game library, fast enough that storage rarely limits play, and usually better value than a flagship PCIe 5.0 drive. Compare current price per terabyte as well as speed, then pay for PCIe 5.0 only when your platform supports it and the premium is modest.

PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 for gaming

Start with capacity, then performance

Modern game installs can consume well over 100GB each, and an SSD performs best with working free space left available. A 1TB drive suits a focused library, 2TB is the comfortable default, and 4TB becomes attractive when its price per terabyte approaches the 2TB market.

Advertised sequential speed matters for large transfers, but it does not scale game load times in the same way. Once a good PCIe 4.0 drive is in the mix, controller consistency, capacity, cooling and price usually matter more than buying the largest number on the box.

Frequently asked questions

What SSD capacity is best for gaming?

Two terabytes is the best balance for most gaming PCs. It holds several large games without constant uninstalling, while 4TB suits a large rotating library and 1TB works for tighter budgets.

Does a PCIe 5.0 SSD make games much faster?

Usually not by enough to justify a large premium. PCIe 5.0 has much higher sequential throughput, but many game loads are limited elsewhere. A strong PCIe 4.0 drive remains the value choice.

Should a gaming SSD have a heatsink?

Use a heatsink when the motherboard slot has no built-in cover, for a PS5 installation, or with a hot PCIe 5.0 drive. Do not stack an SSD heatsink under a motherboard heatsink.
