What photographers need from a NAS

A photography NAS has to do three things well: move large files quickly, keep image data intact, and make browsing huge catalogues feel responsive. RAW files are big and they pile up fast, so a single shoot can be tens or hundreds of gigabytes. That puts a premium on networking speed and storage that does not choke when Lightroom or Capture One scans thousands of previews.

Networking is the first lever. Standard gigabit feels slow once you are pulling RAW files over the network, so look for 2.5GbE at minimum and ideally 10GbE if you edit directly off the NAS. The UGREEN DXP4800 Plus builds 10GbE in, while the Synology DS923+ takes an optional 10GbE card. Over 10GbE, editing RAW straight off the NAS is genuinely workable.

Integrity is the second lever. ECC memory corrects rare memory errors that could otherwise corrupt an image as it is written, which is why integrity-minded photographers favour ECC models like the DS923+, DS925+ and DXP4800 Plus. Pair that with SHR, RAID5 or RAID6 so a failed drive does not lose your archive. The third lever is an NVMe cache, which speeds up catalogue browsing and preview generation so scrolling a big library feels quick.

How much to budget

Plan the NAS and drives together, because a photographer's drives often cost as much as the appliance or more once you size them for years of RAW files. The enclosure price is just the body; the drives are where the capacity, and much of the cost, lives.

Use NAS-rated CMR drives such as WD Red Plus or Red Pro, Seagate IronWolf or IronWolf Pro, and Toshiba N300. For large archive volumes at the best price per terabyte, Seagate Exos enterprise drives work well. Avoid SMR drives in RAID. Budget separately for the NVMe drives used as cache, and remember 10GbE may need a compatible switch and cabling.

A common, cost-effective approach is to keep active projects on a fast local SSD and archive completed work to the NAS, which keeps day-to-day editing snappy while building a protected long-term library. If you would rather edit everything off the NAS, invest in 10GbE end to end and an NVMe cache.
