Why the CPU decides a Plex NAS

A NAS is only a good Plex server if its processor can hardware-transcode, and that comes down to one thing: an Intel iGPU with Quick Sync. Intel-powered NAS units (Celeron, Pentium and the newer N-series) carry that engine and transcode H.264 and HEVC efficiently. ARM-based units (Rockchip, ARM Cortex) and the AMD Ryzen chips in several newer Synology Plus models have no iGPU, so Plex either direct-plays only or falls back to slow CPU software transcoding that stutters under load.

This is the trap on the current market: some of the newest, most expensive NAS units are worse for Plex than older, cheaper ones, because the vendor moved to an AMD Ryzen platform with no integrated graphics. A DS923+ or DS925+ is a fine file server but a poor transcoding Plex box, while the older DS224+ on an Intel Celeron transcodes happily. Read the CPU, not the model year.

What each capability level gets you

An Intel-Celeron NAS (DS224+, DS423+, TS-264, TS-464) hardware-transcodes 1080p comfortably and can manage 4K HEVC in many cases, which covers most households that occasionally transcode. The Intel N100 UGREEN units (DXP2800, DXP4800) use the same modern Quick Sync as the budget builds on this site, so they add efficient 4K HEVC decode and light 4K transcoding. An ARM or AMD-Ryzen NAS is a direct-play machine. If every client can play your files natively, it streams them untouched and resolution does not matter. The moment a client forces a transcode, though, these units crawl. So the honest rule is: buy Intel if you will ever transcode, and only consider ARM or Ryzen if you are certain your whole setup direct-plays or you will run Plex on separate hardware.

Then fit the right drives

Once the transcoding question is settled, a Plex NAS lives or dies on storage, and the value metric is price per terabyte. Fit NAS-rated CMR drives sized to the bays, and use the device drive pages to see the exact models and live prices for your unit. A media pool is backed up and tolerant, so recertified enterprise drives and shucked externals often give the lowest cost per terabyte, which the shucking tracker shows live.

If your chosen NAS turns out to be ARM or Ryzen but you still want real transcoding, the split build is the answer: keep the NAS for storage and run Plex on a small Intel mini PC beside it. That pairs cheap bulk storage with a proper Quick Sync transcoder, and it is often cheaper than buying the one high-end Intel NAS that does both.

Before you buy

Vendors occasionally change what their software exposes to Plex, so confirm the current firmware still gives Plex access to the iGPU on the exact model you are considering, and check that your Plex clients need transcoding at all. Many people discover that with a modern client that direct-plays, even a modest NAS is enough, and the transcoding worry was moot. When in doubt, an Intel-Celeron or N100 NAS is the safe, transcode-capable choice.
