The Synology DS423+ ships with 2GB installed and takes DDR4 non-ECC SO-DIMM modules of up to 4GB each, for a maximum of 6GB. The DS423+ takes standard DDR4 non-ECC SO-DIMM (laptop-size) memory. The table lists only modules that match that specification, cheapest first.
What fits the DS423+ memory slot, and what does not
| Module | Fits? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| DDR4 non-ECC SO-DIMM, up to 4GB per module | Fits | This is the module type in the manufacturer's specification for the DS423+. |
| DDR4 ECC SO-DIMM | Does not fit the spec | The DS423+ is specified for non-ECC memory. ECC modules are left out of the table below. |
| DDR5, DDR3 and DDR3L modules | Does not fit | A different memory generation has a different notch and voltage and cannot be installed. |
| UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM (desktop and server) modules | Does not fit | The slot is a laptop-size SO-DIMM slot; full-length DIMMs are physically too long. |
| Modules larger than 4GB | Not supported | The manufacturer's maximum is 6GB in total across 1 slot. |
How much RAM does the DS423+ need?
The DS423+ comes with 2GB installed and supports up to 6GB (1 slot). For file serving and backups the installed memory is fine. Several Docker containers, a virtual machine, many simultaneous users or photo indexing on a large library are the workloads where more RAM noticeably helps.
The DS423+ takes standard DDR4 non-ECC SO-DIMM (laptop-size) memory. ECC memory corrects single-bit errors, which is valued for long-term data integrity; non-ECC is the norm on lower-cost models.
RAM size by workload
| Use case | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| File serving and backups | 2GB (as shipped) | Enough for SMB shares and scheduled backups. |
| Photos, media and a few containers | 6GB | Headroom for indexing, thumbnails and caching. |
| VMs and heavy multi-user | 6GB (maximum) | Virtual machines and many users benefit from the full capacity. |
Where the DS423+ memory spec comes from
Installed memory, module type and maximum capacity for the DS423+ are taken from the manufacturer's specification.
Synology recommends its own memory modules for compatibility and reliability. A third-party module of the right type is a buyer's own choice.

Memory that fits the DS423+: DDR4 non-ECC SO-DIMM
Only DDR4 non-ECC SO-DIMM modules of up to 4GB each. Other generations, desktop DIMMs and ECC modules are filtered out because they do not match the DS423+ specification.
