Size a Plex Library Before You Buy Drives

A 500-movie 4K library needs roughly 15 to 45 TB of usable space, depending on whether you keep full remuxes (50 to 90 GB each) or space-saving h265 encodes (15 to 30 GB each). To size your own server, multiply your title count by a realistic per-title range, add a TV allowance if you keep shows, then pad 20 to 30 percent for growth. A modest 50-movie 1080p collection fits comfortably on a single 4 TB drive, while a large mixed 4K library pushes you into a multi-drive array. Worked examples: movie library math
Use the midpoint of your chosen range, multiply by title count, then convert GB to TB by dividing by 1,000. Here are three common tiers, shown at both quality extremes.
- 50 movies, 1080p encodes: 50 x 5 GB = 250 GB. Even doubled for extras and a few remuxes, this stays under 1 TB. A single small drive is plenty.
- 200 movies, mixed 4K encodes: 200 x 22 GB = 4,400 GB, about 4.4 TB. Add TV and headroom and an 8 TB drive is a sensible target.

TV libraries balloon faster than you expect
Movies are single files, but series are counted in seasons. A show with 8 seasons of 10 episodes is 80 files. At 1 to 3 GB per 1080p episode that single title consumes 80 to 240 GB, rivaling several movies. In 4K, at 4 to 8 GB per episode, the same show runs 320 to 640 GB.
That is why a TV-heavy Plex server often needs more storage than a movie-only one with the same number of 'titles.' When you plan, estimate TV separately: count your shows, estimate episodes per show, and multiply by the per-episode range. A dozen long-running 1080p series can easily add 2 to 3 TB on their own.
Quality mix and growth headroom
Most real libraries are a blend: some prized films kept as remuxes, the bulk as h265 encodes, older content at 1080p. Rather than guess a single average, split your collection into buckets, size each bucket with its range, and sum them. That gives a defensible total instead of a hopeful one.
Then add headroom. Libraries only grow, and running a drive to the brim hurts performance and leaves no room for new releases. Budget 20 to 30 percent above your current estimate. If your buckets total 12 TB, plan for 15 to 16 TB of usable capacity.
One capacity caveat if you use a parity array: usable space after RAID parity and filesystem overhead is roughly 91 percent of your raw capacity minus the parity drive or drives. Four 8 TB drives with one for parity give about 24 TB raw of data drives, and near 21 to 22 TB usable in practice. Size your purchase against usable, not raw, numbers.
Transcode scratch space is temporary, not library storage
When Plex transcodes a stream it writes temporary segment files, by default inside the Plex data directory. This is working scratch space, not part of your permanent library. Budget a few GB to a few tens of GB for it, scaling with the number of simultaneous transcodes and how far ahead Plex buffers.
Because these files are short-lived, some users point the transcoder temporary directory at a fast SSD or a RAM-disk to reduce wear on library drives and speed up seeking. That is optional. The key planning point is simply to not confuse it with library capacity: your movies and shows are the permanent number, transcode scratch is a small, recyclable overhead on top.
