Does TrueNAS Need an SSD Boot Drive?

TrueNAS's own pages do not agree. The 25.10 hardware guide lists a 16 GB SSD boot device in its minimum requirements, yet the same guide says you do not need an SSD boot device while it discourages a spinning hard drive or a USB stick. The 25.10 installation page asks for a 20 GB boot device, and the development guide for TrueNAS 28, a future version, lists a 20 GB SSD boot device as its minimum. If TrueNAS already boots from a healthy internal SSD, nothing needs buying.

Safe steps
These actions can lose data. Do none of them until a copy exists elsewhere:
- A clean installation erases the contents of the drive you select. Select only the new boot drive, never a data pool disk.
- If the boot pool fails and no configuration backup exists, the whole system configuration is lost.
- After a boot pool recovery, all boot environments are lost and must be recreated.
What to buy, if anything
Answer the questions under "Check your situation" and this section narrows to what your case calls for. Until then every table is shown, each with the case it is for.
Small 2.5-inch SATA SSDs for a TrueNAS boot device
Why this is here: TrueNAS discourages booting from a USB stick or a spinning hard drive and names 2.5-inch SSDs, often mirrored, as a common boot device. Every drive here is larger than any boot size TrueNAS states (8, 16 or 20 GB), so this table is for a reader replacing a USB stick, a hard drive or a failed boot device, or adding a second device for a boot mirror. New internal 2.5-inch SATA SSDs of about 500 GB, the smallest the site tracks, with today's Amazon.com price per TB.
Small M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs for a TrueNAS boot device
Why this is here: TrueNAS says pre-built TrueNAS systems ship with M.2 boot devices and that NVMe is becoming a mainstream option for boot. These are for a board with a free M.2 2280 slot, in the same boot device role as the SATA table. New internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs of about 200 GB to 500 GB, with today's Amazon.com price per TB.
