Why Is My M.2 SSD Not Detected by My PS5?

Sony's support page has no troubleshooting section for an M.2 SSD the PS5 does not detect, so the checks here come from Sony's requirement list. Sony's requirement is a PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M) of 250 GB to 8 TB with a heat-dissipation structure, and Sony's requirements say M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. If your drive matches, check the system software, the seating and the formatting step before you buy anything. Sony also says it cannot guarantee that every drive meeting the specifications will work.

Safe steps
- Touch a metal-grounded object before you install or remove the drive. Sony says static can damage the SSD or the console.[1]
- Do not power on or play the console while the cover is off.[1]
- Do not turn off the power while the drive is being formatted or data is being saved. Sony says this may cause data loss, corruption or damage.[1]
- Check the drive's size, including any heatsink, against Sony's limits: width up to 25 mm; length 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm; thickness up to 11.25 mm, with up to 8.0 mm above the board and up to 2.45 mm below it.[1]
- Sony says warranty coverage should generally not be affected if the drive meets the required specifications and you follow the install steps. Damage from not doing so will not be covered.[1]

M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs whose listing names the PS5 and PCIe 4.0
Why this is here: The installed drive does not meet Sony's interface requirement (for example it is an M.2 SATA SSD or not PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe), so a drive that does is the purchase. The listing naming the PS5 and PCIe 4.0 is not Sony's approval: the reader still checks the heat-dissipation and size limits Sony lists. New internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs whose Amazon.com listing names the PS5 and states PCIe 4.0, from 1 TB to 8 TB, with today's price per TB.
Frequently asked questions
Does the PS5 support Host Memory Buffer (HMB) SSDs?
Sony says the PS5 does not support HMB. A drive that uses HMB may perform slower than expected.
