Which Cheap Drive Route Actually Pays Off?

Recertified vs new vs shucked at a glance

How to choose

If you run a RAID array with a backup, the warranty matters less because redundancy plus a backup already covers a drive death, so the lowest price per terabyte usually wins: compare recertified Exos against the shucking tracker and take whichever is cheaper that day. If you are buying a single drive whose failure would hurt, pay for a new internal with a full warranty.

Recertified enterprise drives are factory-tested and re-warrantied, typically for two to five years depending on the seller, and often undercut everything at 16TB and up. Shucked drives are new but lose the warranty when the case comes off. New internals cost most but are the simplest.
