Software and ease of use

DSM is the reason most people end up with a Synology. It is the most mature NAS operating system, the layout is clean, and the first-party apps are genuinely good. Synology Photos is a credible replacement for Google Photos, Active Backup for Business will image whole PCs and servers for free, and Synology Drive handles file sync neatly. For someone who wants the NAS to fade into the background, DSM is hard to beat.

QTS is more powerful in raw terms and exposes more settings, but that also makes it busier and easier to misconfigure. QNAP bundles a lot of apps and the hardware often supports virtualisation, container workloads and hardware transcoding more readily. If you enjoy tinkering and want a platform that will not hold you back, QTS rewards the effort. If you just want photos backed up and files shared without reading a manual, DSM is the gentler road.

Hardware, RAID and security

Pound for pound, QNAP usually gives you more silicon: faster CPUs, more and faster network ports including 2.5GbE and 10GbE further down the range, HDMI out, and more M.2 NVMe slots for caching or storage. Synology tends to ship more modest CPUs and stick with 1GbE or 2.5GbE on mainstream models, and you pay a premium for the polish. Where Synology pulls ahead is flexible RAID: SHR and SHR-2 let you mix drive sizes and expand capacity gracefully, which QNAP does not offer in the same way.

Security is the other dividing line. QNAP has had several public incidents over the years involving ransomware and exploited services, which is not unique to them but has happened more visibly. The practical advice for either brand is the same: keep firmware updated, disable services you do not use, and never port-forward the NAS straight to the internet. Use the vendor relay service or a VPN for remote access. Treat QNAP with a little extra discipline here. Note also that 2025 Synology Plus models push a validated-drive list, so DSM will warn about third-party drives, although IronWolf and WD Red Plus still create standard storage pools.
