Drive cost and storage planning
Both two-bay designs are most sensible as a mirror for important data. That halves raw capacity, so two 12TB drives provide roughly one drive's capacity before binary/filesystem overhead. A separate backup is still required because a mirror does not protect against deletion, theft or malware.
