For a new purchase, the DS925neo+ offers the stronger four-core CPU and built-in dual 2.5GbE, but the DS923+ includes 4GB ECC and can take an optional 10GbE card. Existing DS923+ owners should usually keep it unless dual 2.5GbE or the newer DX525 expansion path solves a specific problem; this is not a Plex-transcoding upgrade.

Should a DS923+ owner upgrade?

A healthy DS923+ remains a capable four-bay DSM system with ECC, M.2 pools and an optional 10GbE route. Moving to the DS925neo+ also means the newer DX525 rather than reusing a DX517, so expansion investment can make the upgrade worse value.

Upgrade only for a measured bottleneck: concurrent CPU-heavy services or a network where dual 2.5GbE is genuinely useful. More capacity is usually cheaper to achieve with drives, a DX517 or better retention policy than replacing the whole NAS.
