Parameter count is only the first variable

Approximate weight storage starts with parameter count multiplied by bits per parameter, then divided by eight, but real repositories add metadata, tokenizer/config files, tensor alignment, sharding and sometimes vision/audio components. Exact downloads should be taken from the model repository.

Quantization reduces each weight's precision and therefore file size, but users frequently keep several quantizations for different computers. A large model in one compact format can use less storage than multiple variants of a smaller family; there is no universal small/medium/large file size.

Datasets, fine-tunes, embeddings and backups

Source datasets can be duplicated into cleaned, resized, chunked or tokenized forms. Fine-tuning creates adapters or full checkpoints, and a safe conversion may temporarily keep both source and exported files. Embeddings are smaller than many source corpora but add indexes and database state.

Add independent backups and projected growth after inventorying the active set. Snapshots can preserve changed blocks, so their storage is workload-dependent. The calculator makes each assumption explicit instead of hiding everything behind a single model-size average.
