Design NAS Storage for AI Models and Datasets

Example storage footprints, not universal model sizes

Why repositories grow unexpectedly

A model repository is more than weights: configuration, tokenizer files, vision encoders, projectors and other multimodal assets can accompany it. Quantization reduces weight precision but teams often keep several variants for different machines, so the aggregate can exceed one full-precision copy.

Training and fine-tuning create temporary and retained checkpoints. Exports may coexist with source checkpoints during conversion. Dataset preprocessing can create extracted, cleaned, chunked and tokenized copies. Budget transient headroom so a safe export does not fail because the volume is nearly full.

RAID, snapshots, ZFS and backup

RAID protects availability through disk failure. ZFS/Btrfs checksums and snapshots help detect corruption or recover old versions. None creates a separate failure domain. Important fine-tunes, source data and production indexes need another copy outside the primary array.

Snapshots can consume substantial space when large binary files change because changed blocks remain referenced. Use retention windows that match rollback needs, monitor exclusive snapshot use and avoid assuming deduplication will eliminate every similar model variant.

A practical planning method

1. Inventory exact model repositories and every quantization you actively use.
2. Add retained checkpoints, dataset stages, embeddings, media and application databases.
3. Project annual growth and include temporary export/conversion headroom.
4. Add independent backup copies before applying RAID overhead.
5. Use the local AI storage calculator, then round to drive capacities on the current compatibility list.
