Which SSD Fits a Steam Deck?

Quick answer

Valve's current spec pages state no SSD form factor for any Steam Deck. Valve's spec page, as archived June 4, 2023, says the models it lists use socketed 2230 M.2 modules that are 'not intended for end-user replacement'. Valve states no size for the Steam Deck OLED's drive, so this page gives none. For more room on any model, Valve's own answer is a microSD card, which needs no new internal drive.

Check your situation

What do you need: more room for games, or a new internal drive?

Add a microSD card: no new internal drive. Valve's own answer for more space is to add a microSD card to the built-in storage. Valve says all Steam Deck models support expanding storage with microSD cards. Games stored on a card appear in the library instantly. Valve's spec page, as archived June 4, 2023, lists the slot as UHS-I, supporting SD, SDXC and SDHC. Steam Deck formats the card itself, to ext4 with casefolding. This needs no new internal drive and nothing from the table on this page.

Steam Deck OLED: Valve states no SSD size. Valve's current spec page lists the Steam Deck OLED's storage as a 512GB or 1TB NVMe SSD, with a high-speed microSD card slot. It states no form factor and no PCIe interface. Valve's spec page, as archived November 30, 2023, states none either. So this page gives no size for the OLED's drive and offers no table for it. Valve's OLED page calls the model easier to repair and mod, with a footnote: 'for trained professionals, of course'. For more room, use a microSD card. Valve says every Steam Deck model supports one, and it needs nothing from this page's table.

You have decided to replace the module anyway. Valve's spec page, as archived June 4, 2023, says all the models it lists use socketed 2230 M.2 modules, 'not intended for end-user replacement'. That archived page lists 64 GB eMMC on PCIe Gen 2 x1, and 256 GB and 512 GB NVMe SSDs on PCIe Gen 3 x4 or PCIe Gen 3 x2. Valve says some 256GB and 512GB models ship with a PCIe Gen 3 x2 SSD. In its own testing, Valve saw no impact to gaming performance between x2 and x4. Valve's current Steam Deck LCD spec page states no form factor, and the archived page notes that product specifications are subject to change. It does not check PCIe generation, does not require a listing to name the Steam Deck, and is not Valve's approval of any drive. Valve's FAQ calls the replacement question complicated and answers it with a video, not written steps.

Safe steps

Check your screen first: a 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen means Steam Deck OLED, and Valve states no SSD size for it.^[3]
For more room on any model, try a microSD card before anything else.^[6]
Insert the card and let the Steam Deck format it.^[7]

M.2 2230 NVMe SSDs on Amazon.com

Why this is here: Valve's spec page, as archived June 4, 2023, says the models it lists use socketed 2230 M.2 modules that are not intended for end-user replacement. These are drives of that size for an owner of one of those models who has decided to replace the module anyway. The table does not check PCIe generation, it is not Valve's approval of any drive, and it is not offered for Steam Deck OLED, whose Valve spec pages state no form factor. New internal M.2 2230 NVMe SSDs listed on Amazon.com, sorted by today's price per TB.
