Mozaic is Seagate's name for its hard drive platform built on HAMR. Seagate's page describes it as a breakthrough hard drive platform that harnesses HAMR technology to deliver extreme storage density at scale, and currently claims 4TB or more per disk, up to 44TB per drive, and a roadmap to 100TB and beyond. For drives you can look up today, Seagate's Exos data sheet of November 2025 says the latest Exos generation combines 90% proven components with Mozaic technology at 3TB per platter, and lists four CMR models: 24TB, 28TB, 30TB and 32TB.
The parts Seagate names
| Part | Seagate's wording |
|---|---|
| The platform | A breakthrough hard drive platform that harnesses HAMR technology to deliver extreme storage density at scale |
| Media | Gen 2 superlattice platinum-alloy media; an enhanced superlattice structure improves magnetic stability at the nanoscale |
| Writer | Gen 2 plasmonic writer, with reduced geometries and an integrated nanophotonic laser |
| Reader | Gen 8 spintronic reader |
| Controller | 7nm integrated controller |
| Density claimed | 4TB+ per disk |
| Capacity claimed | Up to 44TB per drive, with a clear roadmap to 100TB and beyond |
The Exos models Seagate's data sheet ties to Mozaic
| Capacity | Model number | Recording | MTBF | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24TB | ST24000NM001K | CMR | 2,500,000 hours | 5 years |
| 28TB | ST28000NM003K | CMR | 2,500,000 hours | 5 years |
| 30TB | ST30000NM004K | CMR | 2,500,000 hours | 5 years |
| 32TB | ST32000NM004K | CMR | 2,500,000 hours | 5 years |
How to read Seagate's two documents
The two do not give the same density, because they describe different points in time. The Exos data sheet, dated November 2025, states 3TB per platter and up to 32TB. The Mozaic page read on the check date states 4TB or more per disk and up to 44TB. The page is the newer claim; the data sheet is the one with model numbers on it.
The data sheet says the latest Exos generation blends 90% of trusted, proven components from previous generations with Mozaic technology, and keeps the same form factor, interface and cooling. It lists every one of the four models as CMR.
HAMR stands for heat-assisted magnetic recording. Seagate's Mozaic page uses the abbreviation without spelling it out.
What Seagate's pages do not say
The Mozaic page names Exos systems and no other product line, so nothing is claimed here about which IronWolf Pro models use the platform. Seagate's IronWolf Pro data sheet for the 28TB, 30TB and 32TB models lists them as CMR and does not mention Mozaic.
One IronWolf Pro sheet does name the recording method without the platform name. Seagate's data sheet for the 24TB model ST24000NT031 is headed "With HAMR Technology", gives the drive design as HAMR, and states that the drive uses conventional magnetic recording, which is what CMR stands for. So on Seagate's own sheet HAMR and CMR are not alternatives; that drive is both.
Neither document gives a price, a failure rate measured in service, or a comparison with drives from other makers, and none is given here.
