The DS1825neo+ delivers the eight-bay DS1825+ platform at a lower memory entry point. CPU, dual 2.5GbE, PCIe network expansion, two M.2 cache slots and 18-bay ceiling are unchanged; factory memory drops from 8GB ECC to 4GB non-ECC.
DS1825neo+ verified specifications
| Area | Specification | Buying meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Drive bays | 8 × 3.5/2.5-inch SATA; 18 with expansion | Enough bays for SHR-1 or SHR-2 |
| CPU | AMD Ryzen V1500B, 4 cores / 8 threads, 2.2GHz | Same processor as the matching Plus model |
| Memory | 4GB DDR4 non-ECC; 2 slots; 32GB maximum | Regular DS1825+: 8GB DDR4 ECC |
| Networking | 2 × 2.5GbE; optional 10/25GbE | No slower network tier for neo+ |
| M.2 | 2 × M.2 2280; cache | Use only Synology-verified SSDs for supported pools/cache |
| Expansion | 2 × DX525; 18 bays total | Gen3 x8 slot (x4 link) |
| Published acoustics | 23.8 dB(A) | Synology measurement; installed drives change real noise |
| Published access power | 60.1W | Synology test configuration, not a promise for every drive set |
| Warranty | 3 years; regional extension options may reach 5 | Confirm eligibility in the purchase region |
What 8 bays change in practice
Eight bays make SHR-2 or RAID 6 practical without surrendering most of the pool. They also let a business buy moderate-capacity disks now and retain empty-bay growth, reducing the pressure to replace an entire array merely to expand.
At eight drives, warranty, acoustics, workload rating and rebuild behaviour matter more than saving a few dollars on one disk. Compare complete eight-drive totals and usable $/TB, not a single headline drive price.
Workload fit
| Use case | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Photo and computer backup | Strong fit | DSM, Synology Photos, Drive, Hyper Backup and snapshots are core strengths. |
| Containers | Good after RAM upgrade | The Ryzen platform is capable; memory is the first practical limit. |
| Virtual machines | Upgrade memory first | 4GB non-ECC is a starter configuration, not a VM-heavy target. |
| Plex | Direct play | No integrated hardware video encoder for demanding transcodes. |
| Surveillance | Strong capacity fit | Two camera licenses are included; more channels require licenses. |
Backup, apps and media
This is the neo+ model for large backup repositories, surveillance retention, collaborative storage and multiple services. Four gigabytes is a bootstrap configuration: budget a supported matched memory upgrade before serious virtualization, 10/25GbE workflows or a large container estate.
Eight bays hold an enormous direct-play library, but storage scale does not add a hardware video encoder. Pair it with a small Intel Quick Sync server for demanding Plex transcoding rather than asking the V1500B to do everything.
Reasons to buy or pause
Buy the DS1825neo+ when
- It is materially cheaper than the matching Plus model
- You want 8 internal bays and DSM
- You are comfortable starting with non-ECC memory
- Direct-play media and backup are priorities
Choose something else when
- Factory ECC is non-negotiable
- You need an Intel iGPU for Plex transcoding
- The neo+ is unavailable in your region
- A memory upgrade erases the price saving
Synology third-party drive policy, as of DSM 7.3
DSM 7.3, released October 8, 2025, lets Synology Plus, Value and J models released in 2025 and later install DSM and create storage pools on third-party hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology's policy table names those series and does not list the neo+ line separately; the DS1825neo+ is a Plus-platform model released in 2026, and the hard-drive compatibility list Synology publishes for it contains Synology drives only. Check that list before buying third-party drives for it.
M.2 NVMe is the exception. Creating an M.2 storage pool or an SSD cache on the DS1825neo+ still requires a drive on Synology's compatibility list, and that list contains Synology SNV3400, SNV3410 and SNV5420 drives only.
- Hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs that are not on Synology's compatibility list: supported for a new installation, for creating a storage pool and for migration. Synology still recommends listed drives.
- M.2 NVMe SSDs that are not on the compatibility list: cannot create a storage pool or an SSD cache. They are accepted only when migrated, already in use, from another Synology system.
- Any drive on Synology's incompatibility list: not supported for installation, storage pools or cache.

Can you buy a neo+ model in the United States?
On October 12, 2026 none of the four neo+ models had a product page on Synology's US site, and none could be bought from a US seller on Amazon.com. Amazon.com carries a DS925neo+ listing that is out of stock with no offer, and a DS725neo+ sold and shipped by Amazon Japan as an import at $818.82. We found no Amazon.com listing for the DS1525neo+ or DS1825neo+.
Synology's announcement said the line would sell through its global channels, but an import from another region carries that region's warranty and power cord, so treat the Japanese listing as an import, not a US launch. The regular Plus model is the one with US availability today.
