Why Synology's list matters

Synology states that it only guarantees full functionality, reliability and performance for compatible drives. An unlisted third-party SATA disk is not automatically physically incompatible, but Synology may limit support for issues caused by that drive or its firmware.

Check the live Synology compatibility page immediately before purchase because firmware and list entries can change. Keep 4Kn-only drives in a separate compatible array as Synology instructs.

Strict retail filtering

The retail rows on this page require an internal 3.5-inch SATA classification, CMR, NAS or enterprise rating, new condition, supported capacity and a plausible price per terabyte. That excludes the common Amazon misclassifications that put USB externals, portable SSDs, DAS boxes, SAS drives or accessories into an HDD table.

Synology third-party drive policy, as of DSM 7.3

DSM 7.3, released October 8, 2025, lets Synology Plus, Value and J models released in 2025 and later install DSM and create storage pools on third-party hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology's policy table names those series and does not list the neo+ line separately; the DS925neo+ is a Plus-platform model released in 2026, and the hard-drive compatibility list Synology publishes for it contains Synology drives only. Check that list before buying third-party drives for it.

M.2 NVMe is the exception. Creating an M.2 storage pool or an SSD cache on the DS925neo+ still requires a drive on Synology's compatibility list, and that list contains Synology SNV3400, SNV3410 and SNV5420 drives only.

  • Hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs that are not on Synology's compatibility list: supported for a new installation, for creating a storage pool and for migration. Synology still recommends listed drives.
  • M.2 NVMe SSDs that are not on the compatibility list: cannot create a storage pool or an SSD cache. They are accepted only when migrated, already in use, from another Synology system.
  • Any drive on Synology's incompatibility list: not supported for installation, storage pools or cache.

Can you buy a neo+ model in the United States?

On October 12, 2026 none of the four neo+ models had a product page on Synology's US site, and none could be bought from a US seller on Amazon.com. Amazon.com carries a DS925neo+ listing that is out of stock with no offer, and a DS725neo+ sold and shipped by Amazon Japan as an import at $818.82. We found no Amazon.com listing for the DS1525neo+ or DS1825neo+.

Synology's announcement said the line would sell through its global channels, but an import from another region carries that region's warranty and power cord, so treat the Japanese listing as an import, not a US launch. The regular Plus model is the one with US availability today.

Only models on Synology's current compatibility list should be described as manufacturer-listed. A technically compatible third-party SATA drive is shown separately and is not labelled Synology-certified.

Can the DS925neo+ use SAS drives?

No. Its internal bays use SATA. SAS drives, even when they look like 3.5-inch disks, require a SAS controller and are excluded.
