Choose Synology neo+ or Regular Plus With Confidence
Same core platforms, different factory memory and regional value
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Prices and availability come from Amazon.com as of the last update and may change.
neo+ is not a cut-down CPU or networking tier. It uses the same platform as the matching Plus model and starts every chassis with 4GB non-ECC DDR4. Regular Plus installs ECC from the factory and gives the DS1525+/DS1825+ 8GB rather than 4GB. neo+ wins only when its price saving survives availability and planned memory upgrades.
neo+ and Plus model mapping
| neo+ | Matching Plus | Platform differences | Factory memory difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| DS725neo+ | DS725+ | None verified beyond memory | 4GB non-ECC vs 4GB ECC |
| DS925neo+ | DS925+ | None verified beyond memory | 4GB non-ECC vs 4GB ECC |
| DS1525neo+ | DS1525+ | None verified beyond memory | 4GB non-ECC vs 8GB ECC |
| DS1825neo+ | DS1825+ | None verified beyond memory | 4GB non-ECC vs 8GB ECC |
Best family by buyer
| Use case | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Home backup | neo+ if discounted | Same DSM and storage functions; non-ECC may be an acceptable trade. |
| Plex | Tie | Matching CPUs are identical; neither family adds an iGPU. |
| Photographer | Price the complete memory plan | Snapshots and storage are equal; ECC can be valuable for long-lived workflows. |
| Small business | Plus | Factory ECC and more RAM on five/eight-bay models reduce configuration risk. |
| VMs and heavier containers | Plus or upgraded neo+ | 4GB is quickly consumed; compare total configured cost. |
Performance, compatibility and upgrades
At equal memory capacity, there is no verified CPU, networking, bay, M.2, expansion, warranty or DSM performance distinction between matching 2025 Plus and neo+ units. Storage compatibility follows the same model platform and current Synology compatibility list.
An upgrade can change a neo+ from non-ECC to supported ECC, but mixing memory types is not supported. The regular Plus model remains the simpler option when you want an ECC configuration without replacing the starter module.
The practical buying rule
neo+ makes sense
- Officially sold in your region
- Meaningfully cheaper after RAM planning
- Home or light-office workload
- You understand the non-ECC starting point
Plus makes sense
- Factory ECC matters
- You need 8GB immediately on larger models
- Local support and stock are better
- The price gap is small
Synology third-party drive policy, as of DSM 7.3
DSM 7.3, released October 8, 2025, lets Synology Plus, Value and J models released in 2025 and later install DSM and create storage pools on third-party hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology's policy table names those series and does not list the neo+ line separately; the neo+ models is a Plus-platform model released in 2026, and the hard-drive compatibility list Synology publishes for it contains Synology drives only. Check that list before buying third-party drives for it.
M.2 NVMe is the exception. Creating an M.2 storage pool or an SSD cache on the neo+ models still requires a drive on Synology's compatibility list, and that list contains Synology SNV3400, SNV3410 and SNV5420 drives only.
- Hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs that are not on Synology's compatibility list: supported for a new installation, for creating a storage pool and for migration. Synology still recommends listed drives.
- M.2 NVMe SSDs that are not on the compatibility list: cannot create a storage pool or an SSD cache. They are accepted only when migrated, already in use, from another Synology system.
- Any drive on Synology's incompatibility list: not supported for installation, storage pools or cache.

Can you buy a neo+ model in the United States?
On October 12, 2026 none of the four neo+ models had a product page on Synology's US site, and none could be bought from a US seller on Amazon.com. Amazon.com carries a DS925neo+ listing that is out of stock with no offer, and a DS725neo+ sold and shipped by Amazon Japan as an import at $818.82. We found no Amazon.com listing for the DS1525neo+ or DS1825neo+.
Synology's announcement said the line would sell through its global channels, but an import from another region carries that region's warranty and power cord, so treat the Japanese listing as an import, not a US launch. The regular Plus model is the one with US availability today.

Frequently asked questions
Is neo+ less powerful than Plus?
No matching model has a verified CPU, network or storage downgrade. Factory memory type and, on larger models, installed capacity are the differences.
Do neo+ and Plus use the same drives?
They share the same storage platform, but always check the current model-specific Synology compatibility list before purchase.
Which family is better for a business?
Regular Plus is the safer default because ECC is installed at the factory and the larger models include 8GB. An upgraded neo+ can make sense when total configured cost remains lower.
