WD draws the line between its two NAS ranges in its own data sheets. Red Plus is rated for 180TB of workload a year, for NAS systems with up to eight bays, with a three-year warranty, in capacities from 2TB to 12TB. Red Pro is rated for 550TB a year, for any number of bays, with a five-year warranty, from 2TB to 26TB. Both are CMR throughout. Buy Red Plus for a home NAS of eight bays or fewer at 12TB or below; Red Pro is the only one of the two above 12TB.

Where the figures come from
Each row is from Western Digital's current product brief for Red Plus and data sheet for Red Pro, read on October 12, 2026. WD defines workload rate as the user data transferred to or from the drive, annualised. A cell that says a feature is not listed means the Red Plus brief does not mention it; it is not a statement that the drive lacks it.

Three questions that decide it
How many bays? WD specifies Red Plus for systems of up to eight bays and Red Pro for any number. In a 12-bay or larger unit, Red Pro is the range WD rates for the job.
How large a drive? Red Plus stops at 12TB in WD's current brief. From 14TB up, Red Pro is the only WD Red range.
How long do you want cover? Five years against three. On a drive you expect to run for most of a decade, the longer warranty is worth a real part of the price difference.
Noise and speed below 10TB
The spindle speed row is the one home users feel. Red Plus drives of 8TB and smaller spin at 5400 or 5640 RPM, and every Red Pro spins at 7200 RPM. A slower spindle generally means less noise and heat, and a little less sequential speed. At 10TB and 12TB that difference disappears, because those Red Plus models are 7200 RPM too.
Which range for which NAS
| Use case | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Two to eight bays, 8TB or smaller | WD Red Plus | Rated for that bay count, slower and quieter spindle, lower price. |
| 14TB and larger | WD Red Pro | Red Plus is not made above 12TB. |
| More than eight bays | WD Red Pro | WD specifies it for any bay count; Red Plus for up to eight. |
| Longest warranty | WD Red Pro | Five years against three. |
| 10TB or 12TB in a small NAS | Whichever is cheaper per TB | Both are 7200 RPM at these sizes; the live tables show the gap. |
