WD Gold is Western Digital's enterprise-class SATA hard drive range. WD's product brief gives capacities up to 26TB, a workload of up to 550TB a year, a projected MTBF of up to 2.5 million hours and a five-year limited warranty, with every listed model spinning at 7200 RPM. In a NAS it does the same job as other 550TB-a-year drives, so the decision is price per terabyte on the day, which the table ranks.

Where WD Gold fits among WD's ranges
WD sells three ranges that a NAS builder considers at high capacity. Red Pro is its NAS range, rated for 550TB a year and any number of bays. Gold is its enterprise-class SATA range, with the same workload figure and warranty length. Ultrastar is its data-centre range. On the published workload and warranty figures, Gold and Red Pro are level, so compare them on price.
WD describes Gold as built for enterprise storage systems and data centres, and it says nothing about acoustics in a living room. If the NAS sits where you can hear it, check the acoustic figures in WD's documents for the exact model.
