Understand Xiaomi NAS Plex Support Before You Buy

Direct play and transcoding are different jobs

Direct play sends the original file to a client that already supports its video, audio, subtitle and container formats. The NAS mostly reads bytes, so even modest hardware can serve the stream. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media in real time, which requires a supported video engine and Plex integration; no published Xiaomi benchmark establishes that path.

A 4K label alone says little. HEVC versus AV1, HDR tone mapping, lossless audio, image subtitles and the television app all influence whether Plex can direct-play. A capable Apple TV, Shield or modern smart-TV client often avoids work that a browser or remote phone would trigger.

A safer architecture

Use Xiaomi Smart Storage as a network share and run Plex Media Server on a supported Intel mini PC, desktop or other NAS. That separates cheap, large-capacity storage from compute and lets the client cache metadata on SSD while media stays on CMR HDDs.

Jellyfin can be a useful alternative on open container platforms, but the same Xiaomi limitation applies: no confirmed native package or public container workflow means it should not be presented as a verified direct installation today.
