Of the 32 NAS models recorded here, 25 have M.2 slots and 7 have none. Every slot is M.2 2280 NVMe. The link width is published for 10 of them and is narrow on most: one PCIe 3.0 lane is the common figure, so a fast drive runs well below its rated speed. The Asustor Flashstor 6 Gen2 has the most slots, six. What the slots may hold differs by maker: some allow a storage volume, some a cache only, and Synology's 2025 models accept only drives on its own list for either.

Reading the link width
A slot's link width caps the speed of whatever is in it. The AS5402T, Lockerstor 4 Gen2+, TS-262A, TS-264, TS-462A, TS-464, TS-473A, F4-425 Plus and F4-425 Pro give each slot a single lane. The Asustor Flashstor 6 Gen2 is the exception in this table: one of its six slots is PCIe 4.0 x4, three are x2 and two are x1.
One PCIe 3.0 lane carries about 1GB a second. Behind a 2.5GbE port that is not the limit; behind a 10GbE port, or when copying between volumes inside the NAS, it can be.
Synology and UGREEN do not publish a lane width for the models here, so none is shown for them.
