Two makers state a heatsink rule for the models recorded here, and they point in opposite directions. UGREEN says M.2 drives with a heatsink are not supported, in any of its models with slots. QNAP allows one: on the TS-262A and TS-462A a fitted heatsink has to be under 68 x 20 x 10 mm, and for the TS-473A it recommends a heatsink and bundles two. Asustor, Synology and TerraMaster state no heatsink rule on the pages read, so none is given here for them.

For a UGREEN NAS, buy the bare drive. UGREEN's note also asks you to remove thick labels where needed.
For the two QNAP models with a size limit, measure the drive with its heatsink before buying.
Where no rule is stated, the safe purchase is a drive without a heatsink, since a bare M.2 2280 drive is the form factor every maker here specifies.

Does Synology allow heatsinks on M.2 drives?
The Synology pages read for this site state no heatsink rule. Its 2025 models accept only the M.2 drives on its own list for a cache or pool.
