Frequently asked questions
Can I use desktop RAM in a NAS?
No. NAS units use SO-DIMM modules, the smaller laptop format. Desktop DIMMs do not fit, which is why this page lists SO-DIMM only.
Does a UGREEN NAS take third-party RAM?
Yes. The DXP2800, DXP4800 and DXP4800 Plus use standard DDR5 SO-DIMM. The DH2300 and DH4300 Plus have soldered memory and cannot be upgraded.
Will non-Synology RAM work in a DS925+?
It usually works, but Synology supports only its own ECC modules and may show a warning. If support matters to you, buy the Synology module.
How much RAM does a NAS need?
8GB covers storage, Plex and a few containers. 16GB to 32GB suits many containers or a virtual machine. For ZFS, size it with the TrueNAS RAM calculator.
