Why Does My NVMe SSD Randomly Disappear?

Crucial says a dead SSD is unlikely: a disappearing SSD is far more likely to come from a software, cable or power supply issue. Start with Crucial's power cycle, which Crucial calls non-destructive. If the drive is still not detected, check the seating, the slot and the BIOS, as Samsung, Kingston, ASUS and MSI describe. Buy a new SSD only if the drive is missing in another system too and the warranty does not cover it.
Check your situation
Safe steps
These actions can lose data. Do none of them until a copy exists elsewhere:
- Copying or moving files to a drive that keeps dropping out. Crucial says data at rest is unlikely to be lost, but data being copied or moved when the SSD disappears could be lost or corrupted.
- Initializing, partitioning or formatting the drive when it shows up again. Kingston's initialize steps are for a new SSD that is not yet initialized, not a drive that vanished with data on it.
- Updating the drive firmware without a backup. Kingston says a firmware update does not erase data unless stated, but recommends backing up all data on the drive first.
What to buy, if anything
Answer the questions under "Check your situation" and this section narrows to what your case calls for. Until then every table is shown, each with the case it is for.
M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs to replace a drive that has failed
Why this is here: Shown only for the outcome where the drive itself is at fault: it is still not found after reseating, a BIOS update, the slot checks and a test in another system or slot, as Crucial, Samsung and ASUS describe. Check the warranty first (Crucial says to make a claim if it is still valid) and the motherboard's supported storage list (MSI). A seating, slot, BIOS, firmware, cooling or power cause needs no new SSD. New internal M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs listed on Amazon.com, with today's prices.
