Ultrastar is Western Digital's data-centre hard drive range. Its two current high-capacity CMR models are the DC HC580, at 22TB and 24TB on ten disks, and the DC HC590, at up to 26TB on eleven. WD rates both for 550TB of workload a year with a projected MTBF of up to 2.5 million hours and a five-year limited warranty. Ultrastar is also the line that turns up most often as recertified stock, so check the condition label on every row.

Where the figures come from
Western Digital's data sheets for the Ultrastar DC HC580 and DC HC590, read on October 12, 2026. Older Ultrastar models, which make up much of the recertified market, have their own data sheets; their figures are not restated here.

New, renewed and used are three different purchases
A new Ultrastar from an authorised seller carries WD's five-year limited warranty. A renewed or used one does not come with that by default: the cover is whatever the seller states on the listing, so read it before buying. That is the trade for the lower price.
This page separates the three so the best price per terabyte in the headline is always a new drive. If you buy recertified, test the drive on arrival and run it with redundancy and a backup.
SATA or SAS
Ultrastar drives are made with SATA and with SAS interfaces. A desktop NAS takes SATA. A SAS drive will not work in a SATA-only bay, so read the interface in the listing title before buying.
WD Ultrastar drives, by price per TB
New drives lead this table. Renewed and used Ultrastar listings, which are common, are shown separately below it with their condition labelled.
Renewed, refurbished and used listings
Shown for reference. These are not counted in the best price per TB above, and warranty terms differ from new drives.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use WD Ultrastar in a home NAS?
A SATA Ultrastar fits a NAS bay. It is a data-centre drive, and WD's data sheets describe it for cloud and hyperscale storage, so check the acoustic and power figures for the exact model and your NAS maker's compatibility list.
What is the workload rating of the Ultrastar DC HC580 and HC590?
Up to 550TB a year for both, in WD's data sheets.
Do recertified Ultrastar drives have a WD warranty?
Not by default. The five-year limited warranty in WD's data sheets applies to new drives. For a renewed or used listing the cover is what the seller states.
What is the largest CMR Ultrastar?
26TB, the DC HC590, which WD describes as the first eleven-disk platform.
